Who Can We Trust by Pastor Ken Damstrom
The famous Evangelist D.L. Moody had a favorite verse found in Isaiah 12:2: “I WILL TRUST, AND NOT BE AFRAID.” He used to say, ” You can travel first class or second class to heaven. Second class is, “What time I am afraid, I will trust.” First class is, ‘ I will trust, and not be afraid.’ That is the better way. Why not buy a first-class ticket?”
PROVERBS 3:5,6 tells us, “TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND LEAN NOT ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING, IN ALL YOUR WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, AND HE WILL MAKE YOUR PATHS STRAIGHT.”
We are living in times of distrust, where hypocrisy flourishes, and the truth almost seems rare. The opposite of trusting the Lord with all of our heart is doubt! Mistrust has captivated lives and homes and marriages. Trust is a fundamental ingredient in relationships and growth. Too many have allowed their lives to grow around fears and doubts, and even as Christians we at times neglect our commitment to trust Jesus as Savior and Lord. Proverbs 29:25 reminds us of a key truth by saying, “The fear of man brings a snare; whoever puts his trust in the Lord shall be safe.”
TRUST IN YOURSELF, AND YOU ARE DOOMED TO DISAPPOINTMENT.TRUST IN YOUR FRIENDS, AND THEY WILL DIE AND LEAVE YOU.TRUST IN YOUR MONEY, AND YOU HAVE IT TAKEN FROM YOU. TRUST IN REPUTATION, AND SOME SLANDEROUS TONGUE WILL BLAST IT. TRUST IN GOD, AND YOU WILL NEVER BE CONFOUNDED. (Anonymous)
Trust does not come easy or automatic! We learn to trust. When we doubt, confusion often controls our thinking, our attitudes, and our actions. A developing young child is challenged to trust people, things, and places. Once the child gets accustomed to those around him/her, trust begins to build. Sometimes we experience false confidence in someone or something and we begin to develop a phobia or fear and it hinders our growth. The Psalmist reminds us, COMMIT YOUR WAY UNTO THE LORD; TRUST ALSO IN HIM, AND HE SHALL BRING IT TO PASS.” (37:5)
There is a great difference in trusting in the Lord and trusting in people or things. We do not trust in Angels, or people, or rituals or all the methods offered to us today, but IN THE LORD ALONE! We should not even be trusting in our own understanding, as the writer of Proverbs clearly points out. So much of what we call or see today as trust, is not reliance upon God’s promises or wisdom, or Holy Spirit guidance, but leaning upon human dependence! God reminds us in His Word, (Matthew 10:31) that HE VALUES US WORTH MORE, than even the birds of the air, our trust in Him causes us not to be afraid. Either He is in control of my life, or I am, and from the looks of things I so often mess things up, I need to commit to and lean upon Him for everything. It’s a trust issue! Sin leads us in the wrong direction, and leads us to destruction, unless we TRUST ANDOBEY, as the songwriter of old, truthfully said.
A pilot was experiencing difficulty in landing his plane because of fog; and the airport decided to bring him in by radar. As he began to receive directions from the ground he suddenly remembered a tall pole in the flight path, and appealed in panic to the control tower about it. The reply came bluntly, “YOU OBEY INSTRUCTIONS; WE’LL TAKE CARE OF OBSTRUCTIONS.” How many a Christian hesitates to obey God’s Word because of problems and difficulties! IF WE ONLY OBEY, HE IS CAPABLE OF DEALING WITH THE PROBLEMS AND DIFFICULTIES. –Author Unknown
Education and learning in our day have often replaced our need for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We forget that true wisdom comes from the Creator not the creation! To trust as in Proverbs, is to trust God in everything, for everything. The Word says that in all things we are to ACKNOWLEDGE HIM. After He saves us from sin and destruction, we must make Him our Lord! What did He save us from? For what did He save us for? If nothing has changed we need to start over, at least in our understanding. We give intellectual assent too often to God, but forget that His desire is that we become dependent upon Him for all things in our lives. New creations in Christ! Feeling overwhelmed, depressed, unable to cope with all that is going on? Do not lean upon your own understanding, turn it over to Jesus Christ and trust Him! Allow the Holy Spirit to shine a light upon your path and give you a new understanding about being a follower of Jesus. He said He would make our paths straight, give us worthy goals for our lives, and remove obstructions along the way, if we obey. Keep this in mind, “Choices not chances determine our destiny.”
God will not allow those who trust in Him to be snared or destroyed by the enemy of our souls. He never promised a bed of roses, or just an easy street to live on, but, He did promise to be with us through thick and thin, even unto the end. Jeremiah says it all, when the prophet writes; “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him, he will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has now worried in a year of drought, and never fails to bear fruit.” (7,8)
The key here is that we fully trust in the Lord, and not in our own human resources. When our roots keep going down deep into God, we do not need to be anxious, or fearful for whatever life dishes out to us. We center ourselves in Him. Our identity is in Jesus Christ. Let us keep on learning to lean on Jesus!
May we trust our God when the sun shines and when the darkness prevails, when things go good, and when things go bad, when there is no light at the end of the tunnel, and when everything looks hopeful, when I feel good and when I do not feel good. Can we learn to trust Him always? That is why He died, rose again, walked the earth touching every need, and why He sent His Blessed Holy Spirit. He did that for me and for you. Should we not completely trust Him with our very lives?
“TRUST HIM WHEN DARK DOUBTS ASSAIL THEE, TRUST HIM WHEN THY STRENGTH IS SMALL, TRUST HIM WHEN TO SIMPLY TRUST HIM SEEMS THE HARDEST THING OF ALL. TRUST HIM, HE IS EVER FAITHFUL, TRUST HIM, FOR HIS WILL IS BEST, TRUST HIM, FOR THE HEART OF JESUS IS THE ONLY PLACE OF REST!” (Author Unknown)
The Potter wants to shape our marred lives into what is best for His purpose. Let Him take over your problems, break your chains, set you free to depend only on Him! That is when we understand that to trust Him is to love Him! No-one can be trusted like Jesus. The only way to be truly blessed!
